Accommodating Culture, Ritual and Tradition
About the workshop: This dynamic, two-part workshop is designed to provide in-depth information about Hmong traditions, cultural values and rituals. Part one will include an overall presentation by Lee Pao Xiong, Director of the Center for Hmong Studies at Concordia University in St. Paul. Lee Pao will develop cultural competencies by outlining some of the key principles that people need to learn and know when interacting with Hmong people in the workforce.
Part two will center around specific case studies, providing practical information and applications relating to Hmong culture, including: Hmong values (family, work, etiquette), Hmong traditions (cuisine, festivals) and Hmong rituals (religious and spiritual beliefs). This portion of the workshop will include an interactive panel
discussion. Facilitated by Lee Pao Xiong, the panel will include:
Chengny Thao-Yang, Chair of the Hmong Chamber of Commerce and an employee in sales at GE Fleet Services
Kazoua Kong-Thao, St. Paul School Board Member
Kao Ly Ilean Her, Executive Director of the Council on Asian-Pacific Minnesotans

About the presenter : Lee Pao Xiong is an active, distinguished member of the Hmong community. Prior to joining Concordia University, Lee Pao served as Director of Housing Policy and Development for the City of Minneapolis and is the former President and CEO of the Urban Coalition. From 1997 to 2003, Lee Pao was appointed to the Metropolitan Council by Governor Ventura. He was also appointed in 2000 by President Clinton to serve on the President's Advisory Commission on Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders, making him the first Hmong presidential appointee in the nation. Lee Pao as been awarded numerous honors for his personal and professional service and has been profiled in publications such as the Far Eastern Economic Review, the StarTribune, The St. Paul Pioneer Press and others. He currently serves on five boards and is also pursuing his Doctoral degree.
